Getting The Most Out Of Your Voice System: 4 Quick Tips and Tricks

Consider the repetitive nature of your warehouse workers’ shifts: sign in to the voice system, do what the voice system says, sign out for the day… It’s easy to breeze through the motions. When basic disciplines are lost over time, not only does worker efficiency decline, but you can see a real financial impact for your business.

Here are 4 quick tips to maximize your ROI and keep your warehouse or distribution center running like a well-oiled machine:

1. Ensure you have the right equipment for the job. If you’ve ever tried to use your phone after it’s been outside in the freezing cold for a few minutes, you’ll know how frustratingly sluggish it can be. Many voice accessories are specifically designed for extreme environments and won’t slow down or lose battery life even in freezers or the summer heat. Likewise, if you’re in a high noise warehouse, you’ll want to make sure your headsets are equipped with high noise headbands, both for worker safety and to ensure the microphones are designed to hear clearly.

2. Take a noise sample in the work environment, not a quiet room. It’s easy to assume that noise samples should be taken in quiet conditions to better hear the operator, but this is actually counterproductive. By taking a noise sample in the work environment, the Talkman headset will calibrate to the sounds of the picking floor and will be better prepared to hear the operator. Simply say “Talkman Noise Sample,” follow the prompts, and you’ll be off and running!

3. If the headset is struggling to hear the operator even after a recalibration, check the microphone position or other obstructions. If the microphone is too far away, it might be unable to hear the operator. Many headsets will also mute when the microphone is pushed slightly up, so ensure that the mic is fully lowered. Also check that there are no obstructions on the microphone like ice or food. If there are, a lint-free cloth and soft pencil eraser can remove dirt and corrosion. Finally, wind screens are an easy and vital way to ensure optimal voice recognition.
