New FDA Deadline for Food Data Traceability: What Distributors Need to Know

Grocery and foodservice distributors should prepare now for new federal regulations on food data traceability that will impact the entire supply chain.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is extending the enforcement date for the Food Traceability Final Rule as part of FSMA 204. The rule, designed to enhance traceability across the food supply chain, now has a new deadline of July of 2028, giving food and grocery supply chain operations an additional 30 months to meet the requirements.

What Is FSMA 204 and Why Does It Matter?

Under FSMA 204, companies that manufacture, process, pack, or hold foods on the Food Traceability List (FTL) will need to maintain detailed records of product movement throughout the supply chain. The FDA states that the rule will “allow for faster identification and rapid removal of potentially contaminated food from the market, resulting in fewer foodborne illnesses and/or deaths.”

This rule is part of a broader public health effort to modernize food safety and improve transparency across the food supply chain.

Which Foods Are Affected?

The Food Traceability List includes high-risk items such as:

  • Fresh-cut fruits and vegetables 🍎🥒
  • Shell eggs 🥚
  • Nut butters 🥜
  • Cheese (other than hard cheese) 🧀
  • Ready-to-eat deli salads 🥗
  • Seafood 🦀

If your business is involved in processing, packing, shipping, or distributing these products, you’ll be required to maintain and share specific data at each step of the supply chain.

New Enforcement Date: July 2028

While the original compliance date was set for January 2026, the FDA now intends to delay enforcement until July 2028. This gives food and grocery supply chain operators more time to prepare—but don’t delay your planning. Consistency in advance across your partners, systems, and data is essential for compliance.

What Data Do You Need to Track?

The FDA has outlined Key Data Elements (KDEs) and Critical Tracking Events (CTEs) that companies must capture and maintain. These include:

  • Harvesting and packing data
  • Receiving and shipping records
  • Transformation activities

You’ll need to ensure that these data points are standardized, digital, and readily accessible across your network of suppliers and customers.
